Roger Hiorns ‘Youth’ exhibition at The Hepworth, Wakefield, 2013.
Although not fire related Roger Hiorns also made one of my favourite ever artworks, ‘Seizure’. A converted council flat in Southwark, South London which I saw in 2008. Filled with crystals of copper sulphate it was both beautiful and putrid.
Perhaps my enthusiasm is also related to comparisons with a favourite book, one I have read several times, ‘The Crystal World’ – J.G. Ballard, (1966) On the cover is a section of ‘The Eye of Silence’ by Max Ernst, 1943, (full image below).
Roger Ackling’s work is made by channelling sunlight through a magnifying glass to scorch wood.
